Question Hard Drive Problems

I have 3 Acomdata 160 gb, external USB Hard Drives, that I'm have trouble with and want to move the data (thousands) of MP3 to a new large HD. The trouble I am having is that I am having 'Permission' problems, while moving the files and the ONLY way is to individually reset the Permissions to me (not sure why they got disassociated in the first place). I have tried to access properties for the HDs, and get thru all the prompts to change the Permissions, I check the box the says 'Replace all inheritable permissions on all... Then comes a Security message, this will replace ...Do you wish to continue, then YES. I then get an error message, listing the file and it says 'Access Denied' ~ I Could do them all individually, BUT I probably won't live that long! Can anyone help?

Oh, I am also running Vista ~ NTFS Format

Kahiko ~

Default Re: Hard Drive Problems

Have you tried taking ownership of the files, see link below:

How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP

Otherwise the following always works:

Start > Run > Type: cmd > Click OK

type the following substituting the drive letter of the external for the D:\

cacls d:\ /t /g everyone:f

This will overwrite "all" permissions on the drives to allow everyone access. I highly recommend reformatting all of the drives after you have got the files off them if you use method 2. Otherwise you will have reset permissions to allow system and administrators full control in case you have the same problem again.

...I already tried the first ~ no luck!

The second began with cacls is now deprecated, please use icacls, which I did ~ after inputting it, it said 'everyone:f' invalid parameter ~ I then tried multiple combinations of the different letters/codes...I'm still out there flapping ~

Thanks for your help ~ still no luck!

icacls syntax is:

icacls d:\* /setowner username /t

With d being the drive letter and username your username.

or

icacls d:\ /t /grant username:f
