Default Looking to replace my existing hard drive

Hello,

First off, I'm very green at working with the internal parts of a computer. Is there a tutorial that would show me how to replace my existing hard drive with a new one? The one currently in my PC is making a steady, low grinding sound and I'd like to replace it before I'm stuck without anything operating. Any help in getting me started would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jake

I'm assuming you have an IDE hard drive, in which case take a look here:

Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more!

I recommend something like 80Gbs to 200Gbs, I've had the best experience with Seagate manufactured drives myself although WesternDigital is fairly good as well.

In terms of installing a new HD, it's fairly simple, just two cables to connect and you can't mistake em for each other

Once you have the new HD in you'll have to re-install Windows and all that on it, you can of course, connect the dying drive to it afterwards (make sure to always power off computer before switching components around) and make the new as Master (first cable connection) and the old on the seond connection and transfer files between them once you boot up from the new drive.

Shpenny, if you download and install MaxBlast 5: Seagate Technology - MaxBlast 5
you can clone your old 'C' drive onto the new drive and won't have to reinstall Windows and all the many other things a clean install involves. The new drive will have the same 'personality' as the old drive.

All aspects of installing the new drive are clearly spelled out on the site, and couldn't be easier. After the process is finished, you just remove your old 'C' drive and install the new one in it's place.

Cloning is never a good idea, as you never know what malware and other nasty stuff may be hidden in the HD

Cloning is a very good idea. If you have half a brain (DL) you run decent antispy/antivirus software (not Freeware programs, most of that is junk) and there is no problem.

I realize this part is off topic, but DL I want you to STOP following me around PCHF and criticising my postings. My suggestions are based on FACTS and are checked/rechecked before entry. You (and a few others who think they know-it-all because of a high number of postings) appear to think my contributions must pass the 'DarkLord' test, or agree with your opinions. NOTHING could be further from the truth.

Back Off............
