Default Acer Aspire 1520 Blue Screening-Help!!

Hi Guys,

I have an Acer Aspire 1520 laptop.

Bought it from ebay the otherday and it seemed fine for a few hours then we went and did updates from MS and its blue screening on boot up after its been switched off for a bit?

While the laptops on its fine, but if you shut down and come back later and boot up it blue screens on boot and sets itself into a loop and bluescreens and boots over and over never managing to properly boot.

Sometimes we can break the cycle and get the boot menu to choose last settings or boot windows normally and it will work again, but sometimes the only way to get it back on is to run the system recovery discs and start from scratch?

I thought it was the hard drive so went and bought a new one and it was fine ..we have been back on to MS and updated windowsxp home edition and its doing it again??

Im stumped as to what to look for ?

Could it me the memory? CPU? or could windows updates mess it up?

The blue screen doesnt stay long enough for me to read it just flashes quickly so dont see much info to look into?

Any thoughts or assistance is welcomes in trying to fix this.

Thanks again

Hi,

You can force the PC to stop (not reboot) at the BSOD by doing this;

- click on the Start button.
- right click on the My Computer item in the Start Menu.
- select the Properties item from the Context Menu that scrolls out.
- click on the Advanced tab.
- click the button for Settings under Startup and Recovery.
- click to remove the check mark next to Automatic Restart.
- click OK.

The BSOD will give us more information.

Hi Hengis,
Thanks for your reply,
Im reinstalling the master discs again to take out anything MS updates or norton AV may have added and will start afresh and as you suggested I will make the change to try and catch the bluesceen message.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replys so far.
Well All I had installed was the master discs, Office, Norton AV and all the MS updates for WinXP home as it was set to retieve all updates auto.. the first time it ran it got like 30 meg of updates..

So now ive reinstalled onto the new hard drive and have not allowed updates..
Ive rebooted so many times now and turned it off and on and its fine....

It was like this when I got it so Im wondeing is there something in MS updates that could do this or MS Office or Norton AV?

Im hoping it wont blue screen again and dunno what to install till I see or if thereare any checks I can do In the meantime to see if there is something wrong?

Thanks again for the replys and fingers are firmly crossed its MS updates that caused the problem and not the laptop itself as i guess I can live without them!

Cheers
T

Hi honestly you do need the updates. When I reinstalled XP pro I had 93 updates on first update service. Some will not install as they are maybe drivers or some conflict with others so they do not install but will next time.

You do need updates.Or do it this way go to microsoft update and choose custom install not express and get ALL your software and security updates, you can then pick wich ones to install.Do not install the driver updates get them from the manufacturers website for your computer.
