Default SATA HDD gone wrong =(

hi my name is minsoo and im from buenos aires argentina nice to meet you all''..,
i am new to the forums and hope to get some help from you guys.
ok the problem im having is that:
i got a new pc (actually the one my sister was using). it has 1 hd with only 1 sata power cord..
but i needed 2 power cords for my ex and back up hd. so what i did was:
going to my friends house and take out his sata cable that has 1 in and 2 outs: http://www.solentcables.co.uk/acatalog/RB-415.jpg.
after that i plugged my regular 1 in 1 out sata power cord in it.. and... **** right after conecting it... when we turned the pc smoke started to come out of the hd........ i f***d it up..... i gots to buy him a new hd one today.
then rite after that happened i went to my house , and plugged the sata cabe back.. it didnt burn or nothing but on my computer when i turn it on it says system boot disk something not found. i tried both of em cables mine and friends , and it is not working...
today after work im getting new set of sata power cables , i have to see if this will work
hope it does..

any suggestions, similar experience?

gracias.
