Default hard drive not recognized

I have a pc which was working fine for about 11 months. All of a sudden it has trouble booting. I am now trying to do a fresh install (xp pro) but I am receiving a message that the pc can't find a hard drive. I believe the hard drive is ok; tested it in an external enclosure on another machine. Any suggestions/recommendations are appreciated.

If its a SATA you must load the SATA drivers at the start of the Windows installation by pressing F6. Otherwise they won't see the HDD

It is a SATA hard drive. Wouldn't the drivers already be loaded? Thanks for responding.
