Angry can't install windows xp

i have a brand new seagate 320 gig hard drive. i run a pentium 4 1.7 ghz processor with 1.5 gig ram, 300w power supply. i've done a full formatt and when it gets to the next screen where it loads the windows files, the comp shuts down and when it reboots it says disc error, press cntl. alt. del to reboot. the bios only recognizes the hd as a 136 gig. i've run the seagate diagnostic tools and they say the drive is error free. i've used the windows boot disks to load the neccessay files so i can install windows. anyone have any other suggestions?//

also with the same system, i use a 40 gig hard drive (maxtor) and i've tried to slave a 160 gig western digital. the bios recognizes both hard drives, but when i go to boot up it gets to the xp screen then i see the blue screen flash and widows shuts down. the 160 has data on it that i can't lose. i've run a diagnostic disk on this one as well and it comes out free of errors. i'm going to tear my hair out pretty soon.....

Hi Beej-- it appears you have your PC hardware listed in your user CP (here at PCHF)... but if you don't check the box giving permission we cannot see the info. There's a checkbox to "Allow others to see my specs" in user CP.

The drive is perhaps fine--but your BIOS may not support a drive that large.
