Default FAT32, External HD, DVD Question

trying to put my dvds onto my external harddrive that is formatted at fat32. but when i go to move the files from laptop to my external harddrive, i get a message that the dvd is too big. is it true that i can only move files 4gig or less on to fat32 hd. and if so..does that mean i can't do what i wanted to which is to have a hd full of movies i could plug into my ps3 via the usb and watch on my tv.
please help
thanks!!!

Hi and welcome to PCHF.

The maximum file size on a FAT32 formatted partition is 4 GB or 4,294,967,296 bytes minus 2 bytes.
does that mean i can't do what i wanted to which is to have a hd full of movies i could plug into my ps3 via the usb and watch on my tv.
How big is the partition on the hard drive?

I'm not sure. It's a 500 gig harddrive. Currently its formatted to FAT32 because the PS3 will only read FAT32 files. Is there way to rip the DVDs into smaller files that i can move onto the harddrive?
Some have suggested a program called Handbrake to me. I haven't tried it yet, but I might tonight when I get home from work.

Hi there, handbrake is a utility to convert the files to say divx, what is it you plan to play the files on?

To make a DVD smaller you may wish to check out DVDShrink. Import the disc and remaster it using only main title and use the compression slider to decide how big you want it vs quality.

I want to play them on whatever will work. Lol. Basically I just want to be able to transfer a DVD to my laptop then to my external harddrive. Then take that harddrive and plug and play movies via my Playstation 3 on my tv. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
