Default [Answered] Hard drives only half value

I am working on an HP Pavillion 7955, 1.5 GHz, 40gb HD (2x20gb)

When I enter BIOS, each hard drive is displayed at just under 10 gb total, when I know that each is actually 20 gb. When I look under my computer, one has 10 gb, and one has 6 gb total. I used a partition tool, and that's what it says, too.

Is it there but not showing up, or do you think it's not being read correctly or something? I know a 200 gb hd shows at around 186, but would a 20 gb show at 10?

Any input would be great, thanks.

In BIOS, a 20 will show up as a 20. The only instance where I've seen BIOS report a HDD incorrectly, was on a HDD that was bigger than the motherboard could support. The Pavillion 7955 can support much bigger drives than a 20gb.

If you look on the front of the drives itself, what size does it show, and also, what is the make and model number of the drive?

From what I've seen, a 20gb drive will report as 19 in Windows, I once had NT 4.0 on a laptop that read a 4.3gb HD as 400mb (still don't know why it did that...). It's possible that the drives could be bad, if they're both the same type and age then it's not completely unreasonable that they would fail at the same time

After checking the model # and searching for it, they come up as 20 gb HD's. Yes, they are both the same Hd and age. They are both Ultra DMA disks.

When running a hard drive test (bootable disk) I get:

I've recently reinstalled Windows, and that's where I got the approx. 10 GB per each, sorry. Not BIOS.

Ahh, I see, this is starting to make sense. OK, what version of Windows are you running?
