Hi, hopefully someone can help.

I have a Lacie Mobile Drive and I had used it only once and it was fine. Then I went to use it again today and decided to format it first to get rid of what was already on there. I selected Format (in Vista) and it began to format but was taking a really long time with nothing happening. So I pressed cancel (I now realise I really shouldn't have done that) because then it started to say "drive is inaccessible" and "you do not have sufficient permission to perform this action" when I tried to format it again. I unplugged the portable drive and then plugged it in and managed to do a quick format. Then the drive seems OK but when copying data onto it it has "cyclic redundancy check" errors and won't copy anything. When I run the Check Disk in Vista it always freezes at 20000 free clusters processed. When I try to do a full format it just says "formatting drive" and does absolutely nothing. Have I completely damaged it or is there anything I can do to help? Thanks

Hello MissX, welcome to PCHF.

There may be something wrong with the partition on that drive. You may want to try an recreate it.

- Go to My Computer, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, followed by Computer Management.
- Under the category of Storage, click on Disk Management, and then select the drive you want to work with.
- Right click on it and Delete Partition, and then do the same again to Create.
- You should then be able to format and use normally.

How big is it? Big hard drives take a long time for do a long format. I had a 30gig that took half an hour =P. Try clicking on "quick format" It just deletes the map and doesnt see the old files. That is what i do with all my hard drives. No problems yet. Its not that its not doing anything probably, its just taking a long time because its so big.

Hi thanks for your replies. Unfortunately your suggestions didn't work I think the hard drive is well and truly damaged. I have sent it away to the company to be repaired I hope they can fix it. Cheers

Not sure if thats the best idea if the data on that drive is not important, it will cost you more to repair than it will to replace the Hard Drive?
