Default SATA HDD and XP

I have a sata 2 drive that has been working with windows, fine I think. I have had to reinstall xp onto my IDE drive tonight because of a startup file error and recovery console not fixing it, well I cannot get the SATA drive to work now. When it is plugged in windows takes an age to load and the drive shows up in my computer, I am just not able to access it.
The drive shows up fine in bios with the typical maxtorxxxxxxx model number.
I am 100% certain my sata 2 drivers are installed as when I look at the installed hardware it says NFORCE 250 Serial ATA controller in the device manager.
I cannot format this SATA drive as it has all my docs on. I am not bothered about music etc, but I am bothered about the pics!

I also have a SATA dvd rw which seemed to work fine before and I am having the same problem as the HDD.

Windows XP

I got the drive working once last night.
Everything was fine and then when I restarted and plugged in my DVDRW sata drive, it just went back to normal for both drives.

While you may be curtain about your hard drive's driver there are more drivers to a computer than just one. Suggest you do the following. With the sata drive connected, first, check your system drivers by clicking on Start>Windows(Microsoft) Update. Click for Custom updates. Second, recommend you click on http://driveragent.com/ and check the status of your non-system drivers.

Driver agent showed both my PATA and SATA drivers as being bad.
I don't understand this as I downloaded the latest nforce drivers from the Biostar website.
Same for the SATA.
I have done the microsoft update and the only hardware driver it told me to download was for my soundblaster card.
I am downloading the 70 odd or so other updates.
