Welcome to PCHF - are you talking about a removable disk such as USB or Firewire hard drive? If you are then can you give us the make and model number?

My recommendation is TrueCrypt it may make the drive slower though since it has to encrypt/decrypt everything.

What I would personally do is partition the disk to have 2 partitions, one encrypted, one not.

In the encrypted space put your sensative data and use the non encrypted space for the non sensative data.

If you would like some further assistance on this, just ask!

  • Encrypts an entire hard disk partition or a storage device such as USB flash drive.
  • Encryption is automatic, real-time (on-the-fly) and transparent.
  • Provides two levels of plausible deniability, in case an adversary forces you to reveal the password:
    1) Hidden volume (steganography – more information may be found here).
    2) No TrueCrypt volume can be identified (volumes cannot be distinguished from random data).
  • Encryption algorithms: AES-256, Serpent, and Twofish. Mode of operation: LRW. Further information regarding features of the software may be found in the documentation

The features are much too vast for me to explain here, I recommend reading some of the documentation on TrueCrypt and then posting again if you need assistance on partitioning and setting up an encrypted volume. The documentation should answer most of your questions though.
