And your right about GRUB putting itsself into the MBR and it has nothing to do with boot.ini but thankfully there is a grub config file for the boot menu
To remove the redundant entries you have to edit the grub menu config file which in Ubuntu is normally located in /boot/grub and called menu.lst
open terminal and type gksudo /boot/grub/menu.lst and this will open a text editor with the config file, if you want paste the contents of that file to Nopaste and I will make the changes for you and paste back :-)

I find it fairly unlikely that the network card wouldn't work.
Can you open a terminal and paste the results of 'ifconfig' here please?

HIP hip hooray, i have sorted out that litlle problem now, all by myself, LOL, it was my Router which was restricting access, i had to enter in the MAC address (plus computer name), the one occasion it worked with Windows i must have disabled the Router protection !
I seem to be doing ok for now, thanks. the main problem is that the PC i am playing with isnt in the best position for my Seat and bi-focal glasses (its on the floor), LOL, i am getting neck ache and eye ache etc. so am giving it a rest for the remainder of the evening.

Lol can't blame ya for that.
Personally I think linux can be a pain in the arse at times as it's different to what you've learnt, but in my opinion it's worth learning.
There are also a few REALLY cool apps for linux that you can't get for windows (yet)

If you have a good computer, you can run Beryl, it's a desktop eye candy program.
Beryl-project.org
To see some of what you can do with it, go to YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. and search Beryl.
That has sold about as many people to Linux than anything else out there.

Beryl is awesome, it's a bit of a pain getting the xsessions configured properly though, not tried it in feisty yet though, might be a bit easier, but in debian and edgy it was a pain.
