Have you considered trying Linux as a Live CD ie. it runs straight from the CD so you don't have to Install anything..........the only drawback of this type of Linux is that it's slower and only as fast as your CD drive

Once the CD has booted this is 'Live Mode' which means it makes NO changes to your computer at all, this is fantastic for 'test driving' the os and troubleshooting.

You should notice on the desktop there is an icon named 'install' once you double click this a window will pop up that will allow you to install the operating system, it will ask you a few simple questions such as your location and time zone, keyboard layout and user name, then it will ask you about which partition to install to etc...

Make sure you read all the prompts and select 'Manually edit partition table' this menu can be a little confusing but I can help you out with it if you need.

After that it's just a case of waiting 15-30 mins and once you reboot you will have the GRUB boot menu which will allow you to boot into windows or linux.

Let me know if ya need any more help :-)
thanks for all that info buddy, i can happily report i am NOW getting there.

in fact whilei have your attention !,when i get the GRUB menu there are at least 4 options.

one for Ubuntu, one for windows, but what do i do with the other two, which are obviously related to Ubuntu ?.

Did you install Unbuntu? When you say you get 4 option are you getting these options from a boot? Like what OS would you like to boot into?

yeah spot on buddy, i think this is the GRUB file or menu giving me a choise of OS'es, Win XP is at the bottom, with Ubuntu at the top, it doesnt give me long to scroll down to select the bottom one LOL.

I was simply curious as to what the other 2 options were for, one is perhaps for troubleshooting, the other one i forget what that was it wasnt there for long!, i have only seen it once and then not for long LOL, the other times i have booted up have it hasnt gone according to plan, but i have now cracked it once and for all, if not i shall throw it out the bloody window LOL.

oh in that case you will need to update your Boot.ini file..

Right click my computer..Click properties...Click the Advanced tab and the click startup and recovery.. You will see an Edit button at the top..Click edit and make sure only Windows etc etc is in there..this will stop that window. The you can go ahead and use Grub.. WIll look like somthing below but do not know if you use PRO or HOMe

[boot loader]
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windo ws XP Home" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

thanks for that buddy, but i am getting a bit confused with GRUB, together with BOOT.INI

Ok with Windows only BOOT.INI is the master of all files when it comes to booting up , but it seems as if when Linux is anywhere near, especially when Dual Booting is involved, it seems as though GRUB is MASTER.

With BOOT.INI i know you can have many versions of Windows to boot from.

This GRUB thing seems to incorparate itself into the MBR which is OUT OF BOUNDS TO EVERYTHING and everybody as far as i can tell.

Anyway as it stands at the moment i DO have a Dual Booting computer, Win XP and "Linux", it takes a helluva long time to get LINUX up and running.

Now i am going to start using it and i shall no doubt find that none of the attached hardware works LOL. something that the Windows Control Panel can usually take care of
so i have to find the equivalent in Linux !.
