so far i havent got on very good,
i backed up the MY documents folder on the 40 gig drive onto 3 DVD's, which took about 3/4 hour to do each !, then i booted up with the UBUNTU CD and by the dozens of error messages that came up on the screen it looked as if it thought the hard drive was about knackered, but considering it had been running Win XP for a few years and i had run XP error checking thingie as well, i had my doubts as to its findings.
Anyway the main reason for this experiment on my Spare computer, is to see how easy it is to install "linux" on a computer already running Win XP.
SO, I then decided to Install a brand new copy of Win XP and Re-Formated it using NTFS, this is what i am doing now, so in a few hours i will report further, and IF i still get these dozens of error messages i will take a dammed photo of them, LOL.

Thats a bad disk mate, not a bad hard drive by the looks of it.
SQUASHFS = Read only file system which the live cd uses to compress it all.
Boot up the disk and at the start screen you should have 'Check CD for defects' that will check the CD and hopefully confirm my suspisions about a bad CD
If its a bad CD and you still have the .iso image, try checking the md5 sum of the image against the one on the ubuntu website, if it matches re burn it, if not, re download it.
