Default [Answered] disk errors

Have been getting a slow response when trying to open programs sometimes, its as though the pc is frozen for short periods. Any way checked in computer management and in the system log it shows these to errors reocuring. I have done a disk check and this reports no errors, Diskeeper reports no fragmentation as this is set to defragment when screensaver is active. I have several drives, the system windows is on C and a seperate samsung 250gig drive for data and music, this is partitioned for each. I then have an external drive whixh I use to backup all my data. System is compaq amd 2600 running 2GB of ram.

Have used the Seagate tool for windows to scan al the disk in the system and they pass all its tests. It seems to occure when I put the system on standbye rather then turning of completely, maybe a program on my ssytem is not coming out of standby correctly.
I understand that setting the paging file to 1 and a half times your ram is best, my page file is at 3070 is this correct? am running in classic mode does this speed up the pc? Have also turned of disk indexing, is that correct? Turned of pc last night by going into hibernation mode, so far no probs today, could be standby related. Will have to monitor. The original C drive is now four years old, dont know if thats relevent.

You could well be right, standby does play havoc for many applications, especially applications like monitoring tools, or anything that requires constant media access of some kind, in this case your HDD.

If it's a software issue, you can disable one application at a time by going to Start, run and type in msconfig. From the startup tab, untick one reboot and test. Keep doing this one program at a time until your problem dissapears and you will know if it's an application issue. Then you can decide if you want to use an alternative application or use hybernation instead.

As for the rest, the page file is personal preference. IMHO, 3070 maybe a little too big, maybe 2048. Classic mode does improve system performance in both memory and CPU. Disk indexing, good (until it comes to searching for files).

I've heard people saying that disks should last forever. but in reality, I've only ever seen one last more than 6-7 years, if looked after. Your PC should have a few years yet, but you will find it more and more difficult to get parts as time goes by.

Thanks for the info, I will put system into hibernation and monitor results. Have also read somewhere that moving the paging file from your C drive onto a seperate HDD also improves performance. Whats your view on this? if so whats the procedure for doing this. You can mark this problem as fixed, thanks MM. Just trying to squeeze every last bit of performance out of this ageing AMD 2600 cpu, upgrade cpus are limited I think.

Steve

lol, yes, moving the paging file is something I do as well. Is basically select No Paging file for your C, and then set the size of the paging file you want on another drive. Real easy.

EDIT: Marked as answered.
