Default Installing 2nd HD

Ok guys, I've done my research, and look forward to upgrading my 3GB HD with an additional 15GB HD, but I'm afraid to take the next step. I understand the master/slave concept, and that I also need a power supply. Both HDs are compatible, and there's a separate connection to the motherboard for the HD, C Drive and A Drive.

The net tech guy at work suggests I make it a slave to my C Drive IDE connector, (has something to do with virtual vs. physical space?), but everything I've read talks about plugging it into the original HD IDE.

Decisions, decisions . . . I'm entering a realm I'm not familiar with, which could majorly affect my operational abilities, so any comments, suggestions, helpful hints, guidance?

Hi there

When you get the new hard drive you connect it like this shown in the diagram - if it is an IDE hard drive?

And you should already have a power supply, otherwise it won't work, if you are unsure use the Power Supply calculator in my signature and find out how much you need.

The hard drive will be connected as the slave on the end of the cable.

That's a good diagram -- thanks! And valuable, too 'cuzI thought the end of the IDE would remain attached to the original (master) HD, and the new (slave) HD would plug in the middle connector. Apparently it's vice-versa (or am I misinterpreting your directions?)

However, is all this connecting happening on the IDE that goes to the HD, or the one that goes to the CD drive? The net-tech guy drew two diagrams for me: The new HD branches off the IDE for the CD drive, OR it goes new slave HD, CD, motherboard, and the original HD is a direct link. Either way, the new HD isn't in line with the old one for some reason . . . (or else I'm misinterpreting his directions!)

Sorry if I have all this "bass-ackwards"!
