Default Installing second HDD

Hello!
My father just presented me new HardDrive but I'm not quite sure how to install it properly.
The main question is: on what ?connecting pipeline? (or I'm sorry, I don't know how it is called on english, the thin and wide cable, not the power one) should I put the second HDD?
What devices do I have: DVD-ROM
CD-ROM
The MAIN HardDrive (the one on which Windows is installed)
The SECOND HardDrive (on which I'm planning to store files)
I have two thin and wide cable with two ?connectors (I guess it's called that)? on each cable and many many power cables. I have heard different opinions on this case, some people say that It's best to put 2xHDD on one ?connecting pipeline? and 2xDVD-ROMS and another ?pipeline?, because if I put HDD+DVD-ROM I'll have slower performance. Some, however believe that HDD+DVD-ROM and HDD+DVD-ROM is better. So I'd like to hear your expert opinion on this case.
Also, what action must I take to this new HDD? I currently have 2 local disks with some stuff on them (on one of them another system is (or better to say used to be) installed).
Should I just format them both? About having several local disks... what advantages do I get if I have just one or two or whatever? If I wish to have just one local disk instead of two, how should I make 2 into 1?
I think I installed 'the master-slave thingie' properly, I have MAIN HardDrive (the one on which Windows is installed) in MASTER position and the second HardDrive (on which I'm planning to store files) in SLAVE position.
I'm really sorry, but I'm not quite familiar with that terminology, I hope you have understood me.

no worrys just make sure second hdd is set to SLAVE and connect it ti that wide cable with second connector and plug in the power start your comp and it should go.if you do not know how to combine your HDD and CD-rom DVD-rom tha do it easyly HDD on primari connector CD on secondary. if you like one HDD instead of two but you want still use both of them you can mount second HDD to the first HDD and you will get one large HDD. go to my computer icon right click ---manage---disk management---delete partition and right click on the neww HDD choze new partition and folow on screen wizard to create a extended partition for your main HDD

Thank you very much for your reply.
I would also like to know what for I might need dividing this HDD into several Local Disks?
Also: How to achieve the highest performance in a game (Wold of Warcraft). Should I run this from the main HDD (the one on which Windows is installed) or should I move the foldre with the game to nearly empty second HDD? Would you suggest storing files (like videos, music etc.) on Main HDD or Second one and from where to run PROgrams?
How should I care about my HDD? Should I run defragmentation regulary and what's the point in that?
Thanks.
