I wish i could thank myself

i fixed it... did a second - deeper scan and found the old partion data (hdd only ever had one partion on it) and repaired it, rebooted and have all my data back !

i used this utility, which may be a godsend!

thanks for that, i was only joking though... the lack of GUI in the software makes it a little dauntin but the oonline documentation is concise and accurate
