Default formatting problem

ok i just want to format a 40gb hard drive i'm throwing into my comp to run ubuntu on,basically its saying something is running from it,which is impossible due to i deleted everything off the hard drive because there was a windows xp on it,i deleted eveything from it cause it wudnt format,so now everything is deleted its still saying something running from it.well there is still one file on the hard drive which is the windows file,but i deleted everything inside of the windows file,but its saying there's 37.gb available but something is taking up 4gb of it still so there is 33gb free.what is this?is there a hidden file in the windows file i cant see.any help would be gr8 so i can format this thing and get my ubuntu up and running.

Hi wonderbar,

It's been a long time since i've installed any version of linux - but from memory the installation process formats the computer anyway.

Why not just use that?

fdisk will kill what ever is giving you the headache boot off a boot disk and do it!
