Smile [Answered] Running out of hard disc space ,need advice on upgrading.

At the moment I've got a 60gb hard drive on my PC thats rapidly running out of space.I want to know if I should replace it and get one big hard drive or can I get a 80gb one and use both on my PC.
I also want to install Windows Vista on my new hard drive but would like to keep all my old setting. The Windows that is running on my system now is not a genuine copy of XP so I would have to do a fresh install of Vista.
And lastly I dont know much about the different hard drives and what SATA and Raid means.Where can I find out some info that would help me when I go shopping for the new hard drive.

Hello GSX,

If your buying a new HDD and Operating System, you probably better starting from scratch. Put your new HDD in as your master HDD and the one you currently have as slave. Once Vista is installed, you will see all your files and everything you need as another drive in My Computer.

I'm assuming you currently have an IDE HDD installed at the moment. IDE HDD's have 40 or 80pin ribbon cables attached to connect to the motherboard. SATA normally have a thin red cable instead. SATA is faster, but you will need to make sure your motherboard supports SATA, it will have a SATA socket demonstrated here:

I'm not you need to worry about RAID here. RAID is not a type of HDD, but more a method of storing data on two or more HDD's. If for example, your worried about losing your data, you can have two HDD's which are "Mirrored", and when you save a document to one, it is also saved to the other. If one HDD fails, then you have a backup on the other.

Hi I opened up my PC and I see that I do have a thin red cable like the one in the picture but my current hard drive isn't using it.I've looked up a guide to installing a new hard drive Replacing a Hard Drive - Illustrated How to Replace a Hard Drive
Would the insatlation instructions be any different for a SATA hard drive? And thid is the hard drive I'm thinking of getting http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=HD-022-HI

A little bigger than I originally planned but the price is the same for 80GB ones.
