Default [Resolved] unable to access hard drive in my computer

i have 2 hard drives (a 200GB and a 40GB) and recently the second 40g one has been making a clunking sound when i boot (BADDD!!! ) and this has stopped windows Xp from loading.

I pulled the dodgey hard drive off and reinstalled XP on the 200gb and after some (alot..) of frustration it seems i can get the 40gb to spin up and boot into xp.

new hardware wizard found it and says its installed but now i cant see it in either my computer or disk managment console (but i can see it in the hardware profile)

the BIOS also can find it on boot.

some one please help ... all i want to do is get the stuff thats on it and onto my working hard drive!

Which drive is the system drive (the drive you boot from)? If it's the 200 gig, slave the 40 gig and get the data off as soon as possible, as it sounds like the hd is experiencing the lovely click of death. But we need to know which you are currently booting from.

Thanks,

v

Hey Guys,

@Caustic - Welcome to PCHF. We have a wonderful team of techs here, and I feel certain that we will be able to help you access your HDD.

I didn't realize that Valis had gotten to you yet, so I PMd one of our Hardware Gurus who should be around to chime in as well.

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

have you verified that the jumpers are set correctly? If it's an older drive, it could still be set to master as opposed to slave. Also, if you are going the cable select route, be sure that the sytem (boot) drive is at the END of the hd cable.

Let us know if that helps.

Thanks,

v

after turning off to check these settings the hdd is making the stupid clunk sound and windows makes it to the loading screen (with the blue bar at the bottom) and just sits there not getting any further.

i'll check again with the jumper settings, but it wasnt an issue before.
