Hi Kamo

Welcome to PC Help Forums

Well I'm not bothered whether the guy eats cats but Hengis (Main man here) might be.
But alas I digress, hold on for just a fragment in time and one of our Tech Team will be with you.
By the way why is your AVG Anti Spyware turned off or out of date?

Hello Sean,

Welcome to PCHF.

Can you follow the "BSOD's" link on my signature, and follow the instructions on how to post a dump file here.

You will need some software to recover your data off your HDD. The best recovery software I've seen is called R-Studio. You will need to know which file system (NTFS/FAT32) you have been using on your external HDD. It does cost a little, but it's well worth it if you value the data on your HDD. There are companies that also provide a recovery service, but the tend to charge much more. Have a look at R-Studio here: File Recovery and Data Recovery Software. Hard Drive recovery utility

To be honest kamo, it's been quite a while since I originally used the demo. I think it allows you to scan the entire drive, and tells you the status of that file(s) (if it is intact or corrupt), but only retrieve a very small portion of the files. You also need a bit of spare disk space to restore the files to. It does not recover the partition itself. It allows you to retrieve the data you need before reformatting.

Before you do anything though, if you haven't already done so, right click on the drive, and go to Properties, followed by the Tools tab.Under "Error Checking", click on Check Now. Tick box check box's and Start.

Also go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Storage - Disk Management category. You will see you drive here. Right click on it and see if you have the option to rebuild the disk. The rebuild option is only given to you if it's possible to rebuild, and does actually work quite well 95% of the time, but doing so will decrease the chances of R-Studio retreiving all of your data if something goes wrong.
