If your not in Safe Mode then you must be in the BIOS and the k/board works ok then you say.
It seems to me that the pc is trying to boot from a network and you need it to boot from the hard drive if you do not have a network installed.
Why do you want to boot from the cd?

Ok
Set the boot to cdrom, pop the XP disk in then make sure you Save when exiting the bios.
All boot files are on the cd so you should be ok to either repair or re-install from there.

No - I cannot do that. My original post highlights the problem. I cannot select "boot from CD" as the keyboard doesnt let me tab down to that option.
The default (highlighted0 is "boot from Hard Drive" - after the countdown, it attempts to do this - and crashes. And the cycle continues!

I can't understand this "Countdown" thing your on about G as once your in the bios nothing should be happening.
Rather than using Tab try the arrow keys or select the first option, ie; hdd 0, highlight it and use Page up/down to change the option.
Get back to me if this does not work.

I an confused. If I prees F8 on startup, I come to a menu which asks me to select a bootup order.
I select CD first. I hit enter.(Keys work at this stage - menu seems to be extension of BIOS menu)
it then goes to another menu, asking me to confirm.
i am given two options.

1) boot from hard Drive (this option is highlighted)
2) boot from CD

There is a countdown from 10 - as Hard DRvie is highlighted, neither tab, arrows, or any key responds.
When the counter hits 0, it tries to boot from HDD. It fails.
