Default Harddrive Noise

I just got a fairly new PC and my harddrive is making a grunting noise. I searched this topic in several forums and all i come up with is maybe its your fan or I dont have enough RAM. Its not my fan because I opened the case and the noise is coming from my harddrive.
It only makes the noise when I'm opening programs or internet pages that are rather large. Sometimes it starts making the nosie and it locked up my pc for 5-30 seconds. I dont have alot of stuff on the PC & I've ran virus scan, adware & spyware programs but the noise is still here. Can someone please point me in thr right direction? I dont mind shelling out $200 on a new HDD if its gonna stop the piggy sounds.
Thanks for your time,
Jason

Hello Panache

Open Command Prompt and type chkdsk c: (presuming your hdd is C)
It will then come back with a report indicating whether you have any bad sectors or not.

I ran it and it said
"Correcting errors in mater file table.
"correcting errors in volume Bitmap
"Windows found problems with the file system."

My wife also said when I was at work yesterday that blue screen came up that said virtual memory is low. Can someone put this in English for me? I havent dealt with PC's in about 4 urs and I'm a lil now! Thx!

Did you press yes to allow the computer to run chkdsk c:/f on reboot?
