Ok so i know the basics on a PC but i'm no nerd... An i was wondering something... My friends just got a SeaGate ST3160812A Barracuda 160gb hard drive and when he went to install it it only shows up as being able to have 7.76gb. And i was wondering if anyone knew what we needed to do to get 160gb from it...

well.. that is interesting... ok. first of all, have him check to make sure the jumpers that dictate whether the drive is a slave or a master, and check to see if it is set on limited disc space. next, have him go into windows, go under format HDD, and format it to either NTFS or FAT32 whichever he is using, that should fix it. if not, get back to us.

Well is it a second hard drive or just on its own?

I may be able to tell you where to place the jumper myself (later though) as i think i have the same drive but it normally says on a sticker on the drive.

Its just the main one... there is no slave... I set it to the farthest one away from the power (P4) cord... the one closest to (P4) is the Limited so i think i got it on the master yet it still only shows to have 7.76GB... Also once we get the jumper put in the right place should i go on ahead and format his PC and set it to NTFS? Or just keep it at FAT32?

NTFS is a better file system and i would recommend setting it to that. From my memory (wouldnt trust that lol) it is the one furthest from the power cord that is master.

I remember having this problem before and i formatted and the extra space came back.

At the moment though my drive is in an external caddy and is playing up, not being recognized which is annoying. But that is for a different thread if need be.
