Try knoppix, or one of the other live distributions of linux. I use knoppix alot, and it works good. One of my favorites too, is Puppy Linux. It is a small distro, around 70mb, and loads into ram, so after it boots, you can take the cd out and free up your drive for copying the data. It has burning programs that work well. Have a look here for download, and docs if you want to try it:
Puppy Linux

I did not see this one listed-- it is highly-rated-- but not free... very small-- fits on a floppy-- will recover stuff that other apps won't.

If you're serious about recovering this data, you need to either purchase a program or send it away.

I strongly suggest Get Data Back, although I'm not sure the website you can get it from.

GetBack has been discontinued now

I used Final Recovery at work and it works brilliantly.

But undelete software will only work if the section of the hard drive hasn't been over-written yet
