Default imment failure

My compaq presario 5000 is giving this error message...I ran the diag on it from setup and it failed. I installed a new WD hard drive in it this weekend. The copy partition failed ....I tried check disk and it failed...I loaded windows 2000 on the new HD and copied the files from my docs. I tried to use "pc locator " but it had an error.
My problem is this...
1. when it boots up It still shows a imminent failure error and I have to press F1 to continue ...this is with both plugged in ...
2. how can i copy programs etc
3. why do I get the error message since I am not booting with the bad drive anymore?

thanks
jan

Hi Jan
Are you trying to copy folders to the new WD hdd?
Did you format the new WD?
Did you make sure the WD was set to Slave?
If that does not work see below.
If it was me I would unplug the old hdd, install 2000 on the WD, setting it as Primary master then re-connect the old hdd as slave and try to get your folders back that way.
Make sure the jumpers are set right on both hdd's

Why are you dragging files to the old drive?
I have to reiterate, set the new WD hard drive as master, set the old as slave then just cut and paste your personel stuff off the old drive before it dies.
Why try to copy system files across? The old drive is in no fit state.
I'd move fast if I were you.

Ok let me get this right as I'm obvioulsy missing something here.
You installed a new Western Digital hdd, you formatted it and installed 2000.
You copied your personal stuff across from the old Quantum.
You are getting a "Drive failure imminent" message.
Yes?

If you copied all your stuff across why are you still bothered about this Quantum as it's obviously dying?
