Default Can't format hard drive?

Hi, I'm trying to install a new hard drive, and I can go in and create a new partition for it, and then when I try to access it, Windows says it needs to be formatted first, which I try to do, and then windows fails and returns the error "windows was unable to complete the format", I've tried a number of partition-programs as well. Does anyone have any idea on how I can get this new drive to work?

thanks,

Hi Mechromancer,

Have you tried the Disk Management part of Windows? This is normally the best option for new hard drives.

Yes, I'm using disk-management, and I get the same error.

"windows was unable to complete the format" or "windows failed to complete the format successfully"

I don't know what you mean by Branch, but it's 300 GBs, Maxtor, ATA, and assigned the letter F.
