I purchased a Samsung MP0402H 40GB drive & case to put it in. When I connect it via USB to my W/XP system it installed with standard drivers (C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\disk.sys & C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\PartMgr.sys). Device manager says in the Device Status that 'This device is working properly.' Why does the device not appear in 'My Computer'? & if it is not formatted how do I format it via a USB connection?

Hi jono, welcome back!

I believe the answer you're looking for is Start -> Run -> diskmgmt.msc

You should see it in here. You'll also be able to format the drive in here.
