Default hard drive failure

My laptop (Sony Vaio) froze up yesterday. I went to reboot and it displayed a blue screen with text for lke .2 seconds then restarted again. It continued until I powered off.
I reinstalled Windows XP however that will not boot either. It says a different file is either missing or corrupt every time I install xp and boot. One time it did boot but all I got was the desktop background and the mouse pointer.

Using the Windows disk, I tried to use CHKDSK, but it will not go past 0% no matter how long.

Is this hard drive failure, or what???

Welcome to the forum.

This sure sounds like a failure of some sort and from what you have described it could be the hard drive. First, try re-seating the drive. Take it out and then firmly push it back into its housing.

If this doesn't work, please tell us the exact make and model of your laptop and we can see if there are hard drive diagnostics for you model.
