Exclamation Cannot Recover My PC - System File Could Not Be Copied After Reinstallation

I have a 3-year-old IBM desktop (NetVista 8307-25U) that is in trouble.

After I expanded memory, I installed AutoCAD LT 2007 and it may have conflicted with Windows 2000 (SP4) and Symantec Norton Internet Security 2006, and started causing troubles (unexpectedly restarts the system etc.), so I uninstalled both software, but I was unable to reinstall Norton Internet Security. Despite the uninstallation, the system continued to be VERY unstable (probably some system files were damaged and could not run properly and started to hang or unexpectedly restarted).

Because of the above reasons, I decided to backup everything and format/reinstall the OS. At first, I tried to recover from the hard disk, which IBM has a small partition where the recovery software is residing, but it was not successful, so I used IBM system recovery CD, but it could not copy some of the system files and at Windows 2000 Setup screen, it hanged.

Since it started, I tried reinstalling again, but not successful, and because it started to have issues booting from the CD, I went to BIOS setting, and I guess I messed up the BIOS setting, now my keyboard does not work, so I can't even get to BIOS to make changes.

Does anyone have any solutions to this?

Hi Crimpshrine, welcome to the forums!

Genie is right, resetting the CMOS clock will restore all your default BIOS settings. However, you shouldn't need to unplug the battery - as this can be irritatingly irritating

Near the battery, there should be a jumper with either 2 or 3 pins. If it's 2 pins...remove the jumper and turn the computer on and off around 5 times.

If it's 3 pins, move the jumper from the current 2 it's on, say it's on 1-2, move it to 2-3, and turn the compute ron and off around 5 times.

Once this has been done - replace the jumper to its original position and you should have access to your keyboard again.

Also, regarding your Windows installation problem - it could be a memory issue. Once we have your keyboard working again, we'll address that issue.

Thanks for quick replies.

I will try that tomorrow. I do not know what exactly was the problem with reinstallation. It's so annoying with Windows that most OEMs do not provide the OS, but they just give you the recovery CD that completely formats the disks. I will post the outcome once I try resetting tomorrow.

Thanks again.
