Default Sata Drives

Hi There,

I added a second 160gb Sata Drive to my Pc. I want it to run as a slave to the first but unlike IDE Drives it has no jumpers to set.
The two drives are both showing up as Masters.
My question is, if I format it, will it just mirror the first drive or will the Pc get so confused it wont know which to work from or can I format it and call it the E Drive or something.
Am so chuffed at building my first PC that I don't want to mess it up now.

Thanks

Hi phool

As you've no doubt also noticed, IDE cables have an option for 2 devices whereas SATA cables only have 1 device.

As such, if you have 4 SATA ports, you will have 4 master devices.
It removes an extra step necessary to get multiple hard drives installed.

If you format one drive, the other drive will not be effected. If you want to set Master/Slave permissions for hard drive lettering, you can change that in windows manually.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that GaRHaR, set my mind at rest.

Disk Managment is offering to covert the empty disk to a Dynamic disk. Is it worth doing this - the first disk is a Basic disk - would they run ok together like this or would I need to convert the original to Dynamic? Or just run two Basic disks.

No problems phool (I feel like Mr T whenever I type your name). Glad to be of help.

It doesn't really matter what type of disk it is...Dynamic is fine and that's what i use at home (my OS is on Basic as well).

Works fine.
