Default Hard drive not recognized

I have a pentium 266 computer. I know how to change the cmos to recognized hard drives. The problem I have run into is I cannot get the compter to recognize the hard drive. I tried Primary, cable select, and not luck. I then tried anoter hard drive, Primary and cable select, no luck. I checked the ide connector and everything looks good. There have been no major changes to the computer. I pulled the old hard drive out and want to replace it with a larger one.
Has anyone run into something like this before

Does your old hard drive still get recognised?

Problem with such an old computer, is that it wasn't designed to handle the storage capacity we have out these days. The biggest hard drive that was out in the p266 days would have been a 10gb hard drive that was stupidly massive. Now we have a 500gb hard drive and noone blinks an eye...go figure.

If your old hard drive still boots - then this is the case, some motherboard manufacturers still support their older boards and release bios updates to allow larger drives to be installed, but i seriously doubt you'll be able to get it to work.
