Default [Resolved] Computer wont pass splash screen unless hdd is RAW

my computer was working fine last night but this morning when i turned it on it froze on the xp splash screen.
me and a friend tried everything.
i have two hard drives one 80gb and another 200gb. the 80gb has xp installed.
The 200gb is the one with the problems or xp.
when we booted it froze on the xp splash screen.Because we cannot connect them.
this is the weird part when i formatted the 200gb as a last resort and it was RAW i could boot into windows. i then formatted it in windows into 2 partitions of 160 and 40gb. and when i restarted it froze on the splash screen.
EVEN WEIRDER THING......well when i boot in safe mode the had drive works perfectly and windows boots even when formatted.
i then tried the hard drive in my freinds computer and it works fine. also when i unplug the hard drive in the my computer windows boots fine.
by the way our 2 computers are networked if that may help.

Hi Let_go,

Welcome to PCHF. We have a wonderful team of techs and a few hardware gurus, I am sure that we will be able to help you figure out what's going on.

I have a few questions that will help us to help you troubleshoot the problem.

When you boot up, are you asked to choose which harddrive you want to boot up into?

If you boot up using the 80G HDD, do you see the 200G listed as a drive?

You say it worked fine, and then you booted up in the morning, and it stuck at the splash screen, what if anything was installed or uninstalled hardaware or software before this happened?

When you tried the HDD in your friends computer, did you install it as a second HDD? Slave to his primary? or did you replace the main HDD?

Have you tried removing the 80G, only installing the 200 and completely wiping and recreating the partitions? Then only formatting the main partition, installing your OS, then formatting the other drives from within Windows?

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

Hey Ladygreenwitch,
i'm Let_go345's mate, we could boot up without the 200gig pluged in, we can boot into safe mode with both installed, we used a progrma called intelligent shutdown, the nite b4, we installed it that nite, then it didnt work in hte morning so we thought we would unsinstall it. it is on cableselect, and in the bios screen, it is listed as slave. we have tried wat you suggested
Thanx Bye

sorry for the late reply but i was away on holiday. here are the answers to your questions:
- No it does not prompt me to select a hdd it automatically boots from the 80gb which has windows installed
- yes the 200 gb is listed
- The 200gb is the slave. 80gb is the primary.
- as my friend said intelligent shutdown was installed. ummm also we networked our computers. i also installed an emulator. i removed these two programs in safe mode.
- we ran it as a secondary in my friends computer an it (his computer) booted up fine
- i partioned the hdd in the disk managment tool in windows. i havnt tried just installing windows on then 200gb. i hav lots of data in windows and i dont want to lose all my settings and preferances and things. it was workin fine till this.

i know i bein difficult by not formatting my 80gb but i only want to do it as a last resort. i will do it but i would like to try everything else first

thank you
James

Thanks for that guys, sorry, about the mix up with you two being the referred to friends.

OK, threre is one other question I need to ask you, why do you need the OS installed on the second HDD, are you planning on using it for something other than storage, and to run programs from? If it is the slave, you should see it as a drive without it needing an OS at all.

That should alleviate your conflict with the second HDD, unless you have another reason for needing on both.

Looking forward to one or both of your replies, .

im not trying to install the OS on the second hdd i only want it as a slave. just for storage. i hav windows on the 80gb. sorry for any mix up.
and when i plug it in windows wont boot unless in safe mode or it is RAW.

i installed the hdd after windows was installed. i bought it a few months ago and installed it for extra storage and it was workin fine.
