Hi there!

Hope you can help!

I've just bought a new PC with a hard disk of 200GB and have installed windows xp. However, after trying to install a few programs i started to get the "Low Disk Space" message.

I checked the Total Size of the Hard Drive and it's only showing as 1.99GB for some reason.

Any ideas why this might be the case and how to solve it?

Also, not sure if it's related but when i restart the PC i get 2 options for the operating system i can choose:

Windows XP Professional
Unidentified operating system on drive C

If i click on the unidentified operating system it takes me to a DOS screen

Really hope you can sort me out as i want to play with my new toy!

Howdy therersedsy and welcome to the forums,
Looks like someojne put Linux or the likes on the pc as well. Was this a refurbished (used) pc? Or is it a brand new Dell Hp etc..?

When you boot into Window's. Could you right click my computer...Click Manage..then click disk managemnt and let us know what it says in there and how many partitions are in there, and if there is any "unallocated space (will be gray if it is) . We will get ya up and running again with full capacity soon.

My welcome to PCHF as well. We have a wonderful group of techs here, as you can see from asa's great first instructions. I concur, we'll get you up and running smooth in no time.

I was wondering if you could also post the Anti-virus, Anti-Spyware, and Firewall programs that you are running, as well as the information that Asa asked for.

Please also inclued the model number with the make.

I tried right clicking on My Computer but when i click Manage i get the following error message:

"MMC cannot open the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\compmgmt.msc

This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also b because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file"

It's a new computer - Maxdata AMD Athlon 3500 - any ideas? D'you think i haven't installed windows properly?

LGW - i've not actually got to the point of installing any anti-virus/anti-spyware/firewall programs yet so it's probably just the standard windows one!

Hey Rsedey,

I think you may have already contracted some malware infections. My suggestion, as you are just at the beginning, would be to completely wipe, reformat your harddrive, and reinstall your OS.

It should be pretty easy considering that you haven't gotten all of your programs on it yet. (BTW, if you haven't gotten up to SP2 yet, you don't even have a firewall up. Windows does not come with Anti-virus, Anti-spyware built in. Sorry)

If you acutally have gotten most of your programs installed, and you don't want to start all over, please carefully follow the instructions for PreWork in my signature, post the resulting 2 logs back here, ewido and HijackThis.
