Default Can't Find USB Flash drives , trouble mapped drive

I had an issue where several users are using the drive letter E to map to a program on the server. One of these users was trying to use her USB flash drive to back up some data. The problem was the flash drive was being assigned the same drive letter as the mapped drive. To resolve this issue I had to go into Disk Management and assign the flash drive a different drive letter. What was interesting was she had two different flash drives and for the second flash drive I had to assign it a different drive letter then the first flash drive. If I didn't do this I would get an error saying the drive letter was already assigned (something to that effect).

What I want to know is this... How can I get Windows XP (with SP2) to first check for mapped drive letters before assigning the drive letter out to a USB flash drive or external drive?

Thanks
S-Luke

Hi S_Luke,

Welcome to PCHF. We have a group of techs on site that work with servers all of the time. Unfortunately, my info is out of date. Let me PM them and I will have them get back to you as soon as possible.

Look forward to seeing you in the forums.

Hey there S-Luke

I done a bit of searching and loads of people have experienced this problem. At the moment the only solution is exactly what you are doing, opening disk management and assigning the drive letter manually.

At the moment the only way of solving this would probably be to change the mapped drive letter to something like X:
That way you won't have the issue.

I will continue looking for solutions in the meantime.
