Default Drive inaccessible

Issue: After upgrading to a new hard disk successfully-ish and then restoring a drive image I now have a x00000024 STOP error which prevents me also getting into safe mode and the Recovery Console or anything.

Train of events: I set up the new 300GB Maxtor drive with 3 partitions, as with the old disk. I put the old disk in as slave and copied the partitions over using ?MaxBlast 4? after having formatted them to NTFS with that utility.

So far so good? Booted normally. Access to all data fine BUT odd icons for programs missing AND Outlook insisting on re-activation using update file which was missing?. AND System Restore inaccessible (error message again mentioning missing files.

So, I copied back an up-to-date Drive Image (Powerquest). It copied across fine BUT at the end when it goes through file checking the progress bar shot back a bit, the program said it was trying to resize the file structure (?) and seemingly crashed and rebooted to the x00000024 error. Tried again with same result. Now, interestingly (if that?s the right word) the Drive Image Restore Environment reports the boot partition as being unnamed and with no file system (NTFS). The other 2 partitions are correctly reported.

Goal: To get the system copied back using the drive images without having to reinstall all the hardware and programs for a rather complicated set-up. The original HDD has been re-partitioned and so contains nothing. My data is backed up on an external HDD.

Any help greatly appreciated and any ideas as to why Drive Image tried to resize the file structure and how I can prevent this from happening if I can get to have an another attempt?

Many thanks.

Steve

Hi Steve,

Welcome to PCHF. We have a crackerjack team of techs on site, and I am sure that we will be able to help you figure out how to get this working.

First of all I noticed in your description that you never mentioned doing a clean install of the OS after installing the new Hard Drive. Can you clarify that point please?

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN
