Default HDD Problem

Ok so I have been wanting to make my own home server, so I decided to install linux on an old computer. So I install it and everythings fine for a while...But then my Hard drive starts making weird clicking noises and ofter a while it just turns off...So I reboot it...it says theres no Operating system. Ok, So I try to go and install the OS again...but it says theres only 7.7 GB's on my hard drive...Im not sure exactly how big it is...but its really supposed to be over 100 Gigs. So I decided that Im just gonna try to install the OS on the '7.77 gig' HDD. When I try to install it I get an error:

Input/output error during read on/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc

ERROR !!!

(and it gives me options)

RETRY
IGNORE
CANCEL

So is it time to go buy a new HDD ? What do you guys say ?

*EDIT Also Another problem is, I have a Linux Rescue CD Which has just the base Linux OS On it, So I tried putting it in and there is a program I can run which is a partitioning app, anyways when i run it, it says that the Hard Drive has no File system on it which is I think I cant install the OS.

Well Prinz, it could be that your drive is dying. From the info you have provided it would seem that you have lost over 90% of your hard drive?

What is the make and model number of the drive, let's see if we can get a bootable diagnostic tool for the drive to at least get an idea of the damage.

hi, you might have installed windows the second time on another partition of the hard drive, this will have only left you with limited space, what you need to do is format your hard drive before install of OS.

The Manufacturer is Maxtor and the model is 96147U8

I looked on their website and saw that its really only about 60 gigs xP

Also I totally got rid of Windows XP of the Hard drive, And at first when I tried playing around with the hard drive and getting the error I tried to format it gave me the same error
