Question Mysterious appearance of hard drive space

I've run into a strange problem that nobody I know has any insight into, and a quick websearch turned up pchelpforum.com, it looked like a good site, so here I am. Anyways, here's my question:
Last time I checked my hard drive to see how much free space I had (last night), I had less than a gig, ~800MB (something I'm almost ashamed of seeing as I have a 120GB HD). Today I checked again to see the exact number, and to my surprise I have a whopping 4.25GB free! I'm relatively computer literate, but I haven't a clue on this one. My recycle bin was empty, so its not that, and I know it wasn't my cache emptying on its own or something as I have that set to ~1GB and had just emptied it myself over the weekend. I've had no problems with viruses or spyware (knock on wood...) and I don't think it has to do with system restore because as far as I know system restore points don't clean up automatically and must be deleted manually. I've yet to notice anything missing, so I'm not super worried, but I'm certainly concerned about 4GB of space freeing itself up without my intervention. Any thoughts/assistance would be much appreciated

Why not try this free program - it will show you exactly whre your precious hard drive space is currently being used. It will also help you in the future, should this happen again.

Thanks, thats a handy little app. Unfortunately it doesn't give me any insight as to the nature of my current problem, as I knew where my space was going before, and still do. Thats exactly what puzzles me: I knew what all I had on my HD before, and I know that what I have now is the same (although I know somewhat more detail, thanks to treesize), but somewhere along the line ~4GB decided to free itself up. Anyone else ever had this or a similar problem?
