Default [Fixed] ide to usb hard disk

Hello! I am new to this site.

I had purchased Seagate 160GB Hard Disk and i would like to
connect it
to my laptop using IDE TO USB connector externally. The hard Disk is
still brand new and never being used - it has not been formated as yet. I
did the required connection but i am not sure as to what will be the
jumper settings - Master, Slave or Cabel? By the way what is the Cabel
setting. The operating System on my laptop is Windows XP Sp2

Please guide and advise.

Regards,
Alok Sethi

Hi Alok,

Welcome to PCHF. We have a wonderful group of hardware gurus on site here. I know we can help you with setting up your new harddrive.

Unfortunately, hardware is not my area of expertise, the hardware gurus are not currently online, they will most likely be on a little later.

I do know that you will want to set your second harddrive to slave. However for the jumper and cable settings, let's wait for the hardware guys.

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

LGW

Default Ide-usb

Hi Sethialok200,
Welcome to the PCHF,
You should set the Hard drive to "master", which should work ok.
BTW cool drive.

Edit: Oops, sorry for that, thanks Radar, m'bad. LGW

may be i am wrong but the slave setting will be required only if i am going to connect the drive internally using the ide cabel connected to the motherboard. also, i tried connecting an internal DVD ROM Drive using the same cabel to the usb port with the master jumper in place and i was able to access the contents of the cd i put in that drive..

i tried connecting the drive with the master jumper in place but the computer doesnt detect it! Maybe it it is because that the drive is still not formatted!?!

Default Format

The drive should be detected even if it is not formatted, but to be safe try connecting it to your ide cable as "slave" and formatting it. Also check the power connector, these do sometimes not make contact fully so the drive would not power up properly.
