Hey there aalexmiller
  • Could you explain why you bought the new drive e.g extra space, the other drive was faulty??
  • Are you trying to connect this drive to your computer as a slave or is it going to be the only hard drive in your computer?
If you are going to be using the new hard drive as the primary drive then you will need to install your OS onto it.
  • Do you have a Windows XP or other OS CD?
If you do then you will need to change the boot order in the BIOS to CD-ROM - HDD - FLOPPY. Place the CD in your drive and boot your machine.

I am less worried about my new hard drive as i am with my old hard drive now, because the "operating system not found" message comes up everytime i load my computer.
  • Did you change the jumper setting on your old drive?
  • If you disconnect your new drive and you cdrom drive, then connect the old hard disk, does it boot like it used to?
The people who i bought the hard drive from said "The drives are already tested and partitioned NTFS" does this have any significance to my problem?
No this has no significance all it means is that the hard drive is formatted and doesn't have an operating system on it. (therefore you can't boot off it until you load an OS)

Ok, firstly i bought the new drive for extra space only and i was trying to run it as a slave, but if i could run it as master that would be better but the precedure to do that sounds quite complicated and i don't know it i would be able to do it.
Secondly i do have windows xp cd somewhere i think but it would be easier if i could resolve my problem without having to use it.
And finally i did change the jumper settings on my old drive but i thought i had changed them back to how they were.
does this information help????

does this information help:huh
Yes that is perfect.

The best and easiest plan for you may be to setup this new drive as a slave, so follow the information below:

I want you to remove your old hard drive and double check the jumper setting, they normally display this on top of the hard drive. Make sure you set it to master.

Then set your new hard drive to slave.

If you are unsure of the jumper settings you can post the make/model of both hard drives so we can point you in the right direction.

Next connect both hard drives to the same IDE cable and plug in the power connectors. For the moment I want you to leave your CD-ROM/s disconnected.

Try and boot your PC and see if it detects both drives and or boots into windows.

Default Pin settings

Wow that was fun .
Ok I managed to get the Samsung page for setting up the drive it is here.
http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/co...de_ENGLISH.pdf
The WD however I couldn't find but I have one and so here goes.

Look at the drive with the IDE socket on the left, there should be 5 sets of pins between the IDE and power sockets if you leave them all open
  • ::::: - (no Jumper) that is "master" ,
  • ::I:: - In the middle is "master with slave present",
  • :::I: - second from the right is "slave",
  • ::::I - far right is "cable select" ( which means the BIOS will determine which is master/slave by where on the IDE cable it is plugged i.e. the end plug="master", the middle plug="slave".

Alright I think I know where the problem is now.

Your new drive, Western Digital WD1600, is a SATA hard drive.

Do you know the exact make/model of your motherboard, if you do post it for us.

Disconnect your CD-ROM/DVD drives whilst you do this..

You are going to need to do the following:
  • Set the jumper on your old hard drive to 'master'
  • Then connect your new hard drive, set this to 'master' as well.
  • You need to enable your SATA drive in your BIOS, so go to the INTERGRATED PERIPHERALS section and then ONCHIP IDE CONFIGURATION
This may be in a different section for you, basically you are looking for a place that has ATA CONFIGURATION and should have PATA only next to it, you need to change this to PATA+SATA.

Once you have done this save changes and exit, then go straight back into your BIOS and change the boot order, you want the first boot device to be your old hard drive - IDEO and then your CD-ROM.

Make sure you set your old hard drive to boot first otherwise it will say "No operating system found" because it will try and boot from the new drive.
  • How many CD-ROM/DVD drives do you have, basically because you have a SATA it normally disables your secondary IDE controller, this means that you will need to attach your CD-ROM drive onto the same cable as your IDE hard drive.

Ok so the exact make of my motherboard is TriGem Computer, Inc. Imperial 1.01
BIOS: Phoenix 6.00 09/12/2002.
(Just out of interest can you run sata on any computer?)

Do i set the new drive to master with slave present or just master (no jumper)?
The whole section where you say "
You need to enable your SATA drive in your BIOS, so go to the INTERGRATED PERIPHERALS section and then ONCHIP IDE CONFIGURATION
This may be in a different section for you, basically you are looking for a place that has ATA CONFIGURATION and should have PATA only next to it, you need to change this to PATA+SATA."
I don't really understand this as i don't remember having seen anything like this in my bios

I have two dvd drives but i am willing to only use one of them as i don't use both.
By the way thanks for all your help so far.
