Default Deleted critical files (Blue screen)

Alright well I was half asleep and got a call from my brother telling me that a friend of his was over trying to free up space on his hard drive and now whenever he boots up he gets a blue screen saying something (don't remember exactly what he said) like the computer can't boot up, and then restarts. He says he can't boot it into safe mode either. Anway, I'm going to be calling him around 3:30 (PST) to get the exact details and let him know how to fix it, but I thought I'd throw this out just to get some ideas. I'm guessing this is pretty simple, such as booting from the XP disk, going into recovery mode and then running chkdsk or something similar. I haven't had to do this in quite a long time (at least a couple years) and I won't actually be able to sit down and fix it myself so I'll be giving directions over the phone, so can someone please give me some specific instructions on restoring critical system files (since I'm guessing this was what was deleted) or any other probable solutions? Thanks.

Also, please read my other thread: http://www.pchelpforum.com/hard-driv...ease-help.html

Howdy rorty,
Here is some things he can do with the XP disc inside.

If it says unmountable boot volume do this

Put the XP cd and when you see the Welcome to setup press the letter R
You will get a dos prompt
Then type "chkdsk /p" without the quotes and hit enter
When that is done type "fixboot" and hit enter
"Y" and enter at the prompt
Then type "exit" and hit enter
The system will now reboot into Windows

Otherwise do this

Same as above but type this in instead of chkdsk/p

chkdsk /f
