Hey there Bull Gates

Could you post the exact make/model of your external hard drive for us.

When you connect the drive to the computer via the USB cable does windows automatically detect the drive? i.e Does the little balloon popup saying new device found?

If it doesn't then you could try another USB port, or if you have a USB mouse you could disconnect it for the moment and try to plug the drive into that USB slot.

Did you see Joe5 question about whether you have got the latest windows updates and motherboard drivers?

its a seagate barricuda 7200.7
model no.: ST3200822A

i get an error message when i try to connect to windows update so i guess i probably dont have the lastest motherboard drivers...the external enclosure manual said it shouldnt need any other drivers, and should be picked up automatically.

also..no, there is no popup box indicating a new device found.

Given that information about your motherbaord drivers, as it's important, please can you post your board make and model number.

I never like getting drivers from winupdate , alot of the time they are not the latest drivers , but if you post the mobo specs as Hengis asked then we will have a look for you.

Also what error did you get when trying to update windows? And when did you update windows last?
