Default RAID controller problem

I have a silcion image sil680 pci raid card.

When I install it [no HDD attached to the controller] I can boot into windows, setup the drivers, everything I'd exepct. But once I plug a HDD into the controller the computer will boot up right to the point where windows normally would start loading and it hangs.

It gets to the point where it says
"verifying DMI pool data ....." or something like that
and it hangs, now and then it will get to the windows loading screen and hang there.

Now if I unplug my SATA [drive where windows resides] and leave a blank HDD plugged into the controller, it gets to the
"verifying DMI pool data ....."
"NTLD data not found" something like that
"press ctrl+alt+del to restart..."
As expected ... I geuss.

When I try to install XP it can't find the drive attached to the raid controller [not that I want to install xp on it though]

When I install it in a different computer, for some reason it prevents the video card on that computer from loading or something because the monitor does not get a signal with the pci raid card installed.

EDIT: I have also tried several differnet PCI slots on both computers.

Does anyone have any ideas? Am I forgetting a BIOS setting? A possible hardware fault?

thanks
Eric

flash BIOS with upto date version, and also sata does take time to boot, like scsi.

Check ya bios is on raid, and ya boot config in bios is set to scsi or raid and not IDE 1,2, ect

Also check you are installaing the correct drivers, there is also a sil680r for raid and sil680 is for base me thinks

OK, this card causes problems on 2 PCS but nto the third one. The third one is not mine so I have not had easy access to it to test things. So I have left it in that pc for the time being. But I would like to put it in my PC. I have up to date bios installed.

not sure what you mean by "Check ya bios is on raid". The only options in my bios with the card installed is the addition of a scsi controller [this card is seen as a scsi controller].

regards
Eric

Hi Eric,

I am going to ask some of the staff to take a look at your thread, perhaps they can help you figure this one out.

@Paulpdh, thanks for helping out. When giving instructions to someone it is advisable to use ordinary English to avoid confusion. Thanks,

TTFN

Would you be able to try something for me, remove the raid card from the computer and then unplug the power cable from the back of the machine.

Install the raid card into a free PCI slot, plug the power back in and then boot your computer.

This process may sound stupid but it did confuse me for hours and my card only started to work once I followed the steps I have listed above.

Let us know if this helps or not?

Howdy Eric,
How many drives are you trying to setup on the controller? And what stripe etc... And are you wanting to boot-up from the Raid controller?
