[Answered] No primary hard drive found at bootup
I keep getting an error screen stating that no primary hard drive or optical drives could be found. I've been previously having problems with, what I thought, was a Windows problem. I couldn't boot up and would get some error message saying some Windows file were corrupted. So, I recently got a Knoppix Linux boot cd and got that to launch so I could at least get my files off. After having problems with it recognizing my wireless connection I had to shut down to directly plugin with a networking cable to the router. Then upon restarting and after the Dell bootup screen and some clicking noises, I get a loud beep and that error screen with the hard drive/optical problem. After a couple retries, I actually got Knoppix to load only to realize I forgot to plug the dumb cord into the laptop (DOH). Now I'm right back where I started constantly getting that error screen even after dozens of attempts and a cooldown.
My question is: I realize my hard drive is faulty, but is there anyway to at least get it to work for a bit so I can get those files off. I got it to work before after the screen, but dunno how it did so. I really need those files but data recovery services are out of the question considering, for laptops, they cost more the machines cost themselves :-(. So, any suggestions on what I can do, even if only temporary, to get those files? Sorry for such a long post.
