Default [Answered] Hard drive upgrade hell - now I can't log in to my unupgraded XP

Hey, joined the forum after getting some help from Hengis who was looking at my forum - cheers dude...

OK, I buy a larger hard drive. All I want to do is clone the OS from the old drive to the new drive. I had slightly successfully done this eventually (I've got some kind of hardware fault which causes the machine to reset - I'll post a seperate thread for that )

So, I've done the clone.... but the cloned version of XP won't work. Log in and I get

A Problem is Preventing Windows from Accurately Checking the License for this Computer

So I try a clone again with Partition Magic and although it appears to have cloned, the drive appears not to be bootable.

Fair enough. Try again.

Change drives around, boot up original OS and when I try and logon I'm now getting....

Local Policy of this machine does not permit you to logon interactively.

What is going on here? Can't log on to my own machine... Do I need to do a repair install? I was trying to save time not having to de-register software etc. etc. by cloning rather than doing a completely new install.

Thanks,

Mark.

What size drive are you cloning from? and what size are you cloning to?
You should be able to clone the drives like you did the first time and then when you get the error like below, follow the instructions

A Problem is Preventing Windows from Accurately Checking the License for this Computer
Check out this site:http://msdn.microsoft.com/embedded/c...n/default.aspx

Local Policy of this machine does not permit you to logon interactively.
I have done a search on this and found a number of different options. Before I display those options have you tried booting into safemode? If so can you login?
If you can then try to add a user account in safemode, then reboot the machine and login with that account.

Otherwise here is what other people have recommended:

Hi, thanks for the reply. OK, I'm cloning from a 160g drive but a 20g partition, to a 40g drive with a 20g partition.

I've tried booting in safe mode, but it still will not let me logon and comes up with the same login policy error.

Looking at MSofts answer.. I don't think I have any kind of remote desktop turned on on the XP machine in question. As much as I can has been turned off since it's being used purely for audio. Also the machine is on a workgroup, not a domain so would I be able to do this? I have another machine on the workgroup with XP Pro installed. I can see the hard drives on the knackered machine, but I know nothing about remote desktop connection. I haven't put my account or the admin account into the Remote Operators group and the Domain Power.

I'll take a look tonight

Also, what is "Target Designer"? never heard of it...

Thanks,

Mark.

Hmm ok this is going to be interesting!

When cloning a drive I have done the following:

Drive to drive
drive with partitions --- new drive

Now you are doing something new, you are trying to clone a partition on the 160GB drive to another drive. I am not too sure if this would work correctly.
The problem is when you first setup the hard drive it creates what is called a File allocation table (FAT) , now when you clone a drive it copies this over to the new drive so that everything is identical.
What you are trying to do is basically copy a certain section of the drive and I am not too sure whether this will corrupt the FAT. (has anyone else done this!)

The main reason that you want to clone the drive is so you don't have to de-register software. Could you try and load windows onto the new drive, and then once windows has been installed setup the old drive as a slave.
Whichever programs you were concerned about (registering) copy them over onto the new drive. Should be able to find the programs in c:\program files\
Once you have copied them over try to run them, if they dont work then simply re-install the programs from CD.
It normally keeps the whole "register" files within its folder so when you re-install it should work 100%.
If you have time give it a try otherwise we shall have to fiddle more with the cloning process.

OK thanks ... Before that though... I need to get the original OS up and running Remote desktop certainly isn't turning on on this machine

I gave up.. Am trying a re-install now. I've still got memory problems although I've found a possible solution to that.

Would a memory chip which is 2.6v, set to 2.5v (what the original ram was) cause the page fault error?

Also now, with the re-install I'm about to rip my hair out. I keep getting a "cannot copy file x" when attempting the re-install.

The thing is, it's different files every time....

Thoughts?
