Default Help with graphics card driver

Hello,

I'm a fairly average-standard computer user (can do all the basics, nothing too fancy though) and I wonder if anyone might be able to help me with a problem that's proving to be completely beyond me.

I bought a laptop a few years back primarily for the purpose of making music. It came with vista on it. Little did I know that none of my music software would work with vista. I took it to a neighbourhood PC shop and they replaced it with XP. Worked fine for a few years. Then about a month ago I got a trojan virus on the laptop. I had a relative who was able to help me get rid of it through many, many phone conversations. In the course of ridding my laptop of the virus I had to repair XP and ultimately replaced it with XP Service Pack 3.

Virus now gone, thankfully, but now my graphics have gone all weird. I had a ATI Radeon graphics card but it appears to have stopped working. I suspect the driver that was put on the laptop to work with the original version of XP is not compatible with XP SP3. I have tried various measures to download an updated driver but no luck. I subscribed to something called Driver Detective which promised to update all out of date drivers. However when I try to download the new driver for the graphics card I just get a message saying "Setup did not find a driver compatible with your current hardware or operating system. Setup will now exit." I've tried downloading a hotfix but this did not solve the problem.

I have basically reached the end of my capabilities. Does anyone out there have any suggestions? Any help gratefully received.

Thanks very much
Neill

Hello neill, can you provide us with the information Wolfeymole asked?

Most likely though, the statement that your Notebook " had a ATI Radeon graphics card " is incorrect.

Probably had an ATI Radeon Mobility.
