Default Crashes when gaming

Hi :-)
I've posted this in GFX because I think that's the culprit but I'm not 100% sure if its the cause.
The only games i`ve ever used this PC for are World of Warcraft and The Sims 3. Both games crash after a period of time and not in any specific scenarios or locations. The screen freezes exactly as it is, the mouse won't move and after a few seconds the sound starts to loop and make a horrible sound in my ear.
I'm not so good at this but a friend told me to check temperatures using speedfan, which i suspected might be the cause. From this it looks like the highest my GPU temp goes is around 68 degrees C and my CPU never passes 40 degrees and from what i've read that's ok. I've tried googling all my symptoms but i cant find any posts where the exact same thing happens and I can't identify what is wrong.
there's no correlation between how much is happening on screen and when my pc breaks. Eg in 25 man content with lots of animation my FPS might slow down a bit but it wont necessarily crash. It crashes often when playing alone and sometimes once it's crashed it will crash more regularly afterwards, as if its still too hot to function properly. Anyway I'm looking for advice not trying to bore you to death x). Oh I tried disabling in game sound because I heard of that causing problems but that didnt help.
Its about 5 years old now, though the gfx card and mobo are only about 2 years old.

Setup:
ASUS K8NHA G mobo
AMD Sempron 64 3000+
2 GB pc3200
256MB nVidia 7300gs (PEAK Hardware)

Summary: Pc crashes when gaming. Think its overheating - any tips on checking or fixing it?

Hello mintedjo,68c i am assuming, is a little high and it would be also what temp your vid card can handle temp. wise. To me it sounds like a heat problem.....hopefully some of our Tech's and or other members can ring in on this soon......thanks for your patience

I just found out today a friend has a similar problem. He went to get his pc repaired and was told his CPU was overheating. After purchasing and fitting a new CPU and fan/heatsink, the problem continued to occur just as regularly as before.

Also, speedfan showed his temperature to be about 30 degrees at the most before it crashed. Given that a PC repair person told him his CPU overheating was the cause of the lockups which continued to occur, is it possible the values speedfan are giving are wrong?

Hi, can I ask what makes you think the sensors are off?
I haven't had any crashes in 3 days after doing the following...

Renewed the thermal grease on my CPU heatsink + cleaned out a bit of dust from the fan
Cleaned the dust off my GFX card fan
Uninstalled and re-installed nVidia drivers for my GFX card
Unplugged one of my hard drives to reduce power usage.

Somewhere in there the issue seems to have been resolved although my friends computer is still having the exact same issue and the steps i took didnt help him at all. Even though my PC is apprently working, I'd appreciate any advice that might help me identify and fix the problem with my friends PC.

Ok assuming that you had ran your computer for a while and it's only showing 30c that tells me something is off, saying that speedfan is a basic software program. Try this software and see if it shows a more correct temp.................Antivirus report for CoreTemp.zip - Core Temp 0.99.5.27
