Question Poor Video Picture 'Green lines' MPEG AVI MP4

Hi, new to site, just wondering how to find out my Computer specs

I'm new to this forum but joined because I have a very annoying problem that I have no idea how to even begin to sort out as my technical knowledge of computers could be written on my fingernail.

Here's my problem, recently when I've tried to play a video either on Media Player or Real Player the picture is hardly visible and is covered with red and green lines crosshatching and flashing. The sounds if fine and doesn't seem to be affected, it's just the image.

The files that are affected seem to be MPEGs, AVIs and MP4s, i've tried a few RARV videos but they seem to work absolutely fine.

This doesn't seem to affect any videos that I watch online since youtube and myspace videos still play OK.

I understand that you may wish me to post some technical info and specs, if so could you please inform me as to how to get it as i'm otherwise ignorant. I should mention my computer is an Acer Aspire 7000 Laptop running Window Media Centre.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hello and welcome to PCHelpForum.

Ok lets get you started with a few things and then the guys can jump in and help you.

Ok here is How to post your computer specs.

Ok lets open her up and resit your graphics card if it is a PCI slot one.If it is onboard or built into your mainboard then leave it alone.Check all internal connections that they are fully connected.

Let us rule out or rule in a heating issue.

Firstly power off your computer and remove from the power outlet.

Carefully give the internal case a good clean, especialy the fans. This may take a little time if it is very dusty in there.

Then download and run SpeedFan,could you then post me a screenshot or list the tempratures for me please.

Ok lets check lets see if we can rule out/in a RAM/Memory issue.

DownloadMemtest86 and follow the instructions on "How To".

Note: If you do not have a floppy drive you can use a CD/USB stick, scroll down the attached links and you will notice the diffrent downloads.

Check your monitor cable is fully connected or even try a diffrent cable.

I have marked your thread as "Open" to receive further help with your issues.

Jelly Bean,

The lines are down to conflicting codecs. ie you probably have four different codecs all trying to display the video in their own special way.

This becomes an issue when different codecs have different methods and causes display problems.

Of course it could also be the case that that is the quality of the video. Quality per se is not a codec issue. Codec issues only relate to the playback of videos.

I recommend that you uninstall any codecs or codec packs you currently have and only install the ones you need. K-Lite Codec Pack is a good one, installing that with the 'Playback Only' selection should solve the problems with strange lines and green and pink squares.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs to remove the codecs and any codec packs.

If none are listed then just download K Lite Codec Pack from here:

Free-Codecs.com : Download K-Lite Codec Pack 4.7.0 FULL, K-Lite Codec Pack 4.7.0 STANDARD, K-Lite Codec Pack 4.7.0 BASIC : K-Lite Codec Pack is a collection of codecs and related tools

OK I went through the Add/Remove programs and got rid of all the codecs that I could see and I downloaded the K-lite Full codecs package but my videos still don't work.

The sound is still fine but the picture still has The Cross-hatching green lines. I can't really think what I may have done to cause this problem since my videos were fine up until a couple of days ago when this problem just randomly happened.

I haven't removed the codec pack in case maybe there's a setting on it I need to change, any advice?

Hi Kronikal,

A System Restore should fix this for you, if you feel it's something you have done in the past few days...

I'm afraid i've also already tried a system restore. As soon as I noticed the problem I did a system restore to the previous week when everything was working fine. Unfortunately it was without success.

If this is a video that worked before and then suddenly doesn't work properly now then it is possible that a codec became corrupted or a different codec was somehow assigned to decode the video.

What I recommend you do is boot into Safe Mode (press F8 repeatedly after restarting) and uninstall the codec pack from there.

Then restart and reinstall the K Lite Codec pack with Playback Only selected in the installation.

The issue may also be that the video is just that bad in quality/has those issues. You should test if this is the case by trying to play another video of the same type and preferably that used the same codec.

(Note that even if you play two .avi files they could have been made / 'encoded' with two different codecs)
