Default Problems physically installing graphics card

Let me begin by saying that I have very little computer knowledge and all help will be appreciated, if advice could be simplified I would very much appreciate it.

I have recently tried in install a Sapphire Radeon X1650 Pro / AGP / 512MB / Graphics Card (purchased from play.com)

My PC is Hewlett Packard D230MT (DQ450T) PC Desktop;

Processor - Intel Pentium 4 2.8 GHz
Installed Memory - 768 MB (DDR SDRAM)
Operating System - Microsoft Windows XP Professional

Motherboard
Bus Speed - 533 MHz
Video Output Interface - AGP 4x

I got into the case and connected the card to the AGP slot but that is where the problems begin. I got a few cables in the box with the card mainly ones for external use, however one cable for internal use. I can connect one end of the cable to the card and the cable splits off into two other connectors, one has 4 pins and one has 4 holes for pins.

I says on the packaging that i need to connect this to the power supply, yet all the cables in my tower go into the power supply, i can see no way of getting in to it.

I tried hooking my monitor up without the power cable connected and the screen displays a mesh of colors, i can hear the computer starting in the back ground.

As i said before, I have no idea what im doing and any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Stu

Thanks for the info Gaz,

OK, lol, will not try and open up the PSU...I have two connectors that have no where to go. Will there be connectors for both the male and female connector. I have a dvd drive, floppy drive and a Hard drive all hooked up if that helps also.

Thanks in advance

Your DVD and hard drive probably uses the same 4 pin (Molex) connectors. If you are unsure, try taking one of those out of your DVD drive to see what you are looking for.

Your PSU must be pretty cheap if it doesn't have spares. My PSU has about ten molex connectors.

I also get the feeling that your PSU may not be able to handle this card which obviously requires extra power. Most power supplies in brand named cases are there because they are cheap, not because they are powerful or reliable.

I recommend buying a new Power Supply. 500W is ample and is about £15 on Cheap Laptops, Hard Drives, LCD Monitors, TVs and more at Ebuyer

Usually there is one 'branch' of cable with multiple male molex connectors and another 'branch' has the female connectors on it.

you can take the female adapter out of the hard drive and plug it into the male adapter coming from the card and the plug the female from the card into the hard drive

this should solve you problem, sorry for the slow response

Thank you Amtech and Gaz,

I did notice some spare connectors poking about so that must be what they are for. Thank you for the link aswell.

Off the top of my head i think my PSU is 300W.

If I were to buy a new one, would it just be a case of unscrewing it out of the case, disconnecting what it is attached to and removing it. Replace with a new PSU and re-connect the cables?

Also, are these connectors (male and female ones) known as "Molex connectors" just for future reference?
